Ok so here is an interesting one. Charles Atkins applied fresh alder woodchip in the winter of 2016. Treatment with the woodchip has no weeds, but also no fruit, the other treatment is compost mulched, weeds but also fruit. We suspect that the N needed to decompose the woodchip has robbed the tree at just the wrong time for fruit production.
